NYMR celebrates 65 years of Class 37

This August, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) will mark 65 years of the legendary Class 37 diesel locomotive with a series of special Sunday services that celebrate one of Britain’s most iconic engines.

The rugged, reliable, and recognisable Class 37 has been a firm favourite on British railways since it was introduced in 1960. To celebrate this milestone, the NYMR will operate a series of scheduled services featuring both solo and double-headed trains, on Sundays 17th, 24th, and 31st August 2025.

The celebratory services:

10:50 Grosmont to Whitby: No. 37688 Great Rocks

13:15 Whitby to Grosmont: No. 37688 Great Rocks

13:50 Grosmont to Pickering: Double-headed No. 37264 (lead) & No. 37688

15:20 Pickering to Grosmont: Double-headed No. 37688 (lead) & No. 37264

Built in 1963 at the Vulcan Foundry as D6905, No. 37688 “Great Rocks” served across Wales and Scotland during its mainline career. Retired in 2017 and now owned by D05 Preservation Ltd, Great Rocks has since seen active heritage service and is now proudly based at the NYMR.

No. 37264 is another Vulcan Foundry-built machine, D6964 entered service in 1965 and worked extensively across South Yorkshire and East Anglia. Withdrawn from mainline operations in 1999, the locomotive has been based at the NYMR on long-term loan since 2010, providing sterling service every season since.

In addition, until September 24th, the much-loved heritage railway has introduced two exciting summer offers:

Kids Go Free - Children (aged 4-15) travel for free on all standard services.

Up to 30% off advance booking. Families planning ahead can enjoy savings of up to 30% on tickets when booked 14 days or more in advance: 4 to 7 days before = 10% off, 8 to 13 days = 20% off, 14 or more days = 30% off.

The NYMR’s summer savings will run throughout the peak summer season, including July and August, when seven-day services will operate. With heritage steam and heritage diesel services running through the stunning North York Moors National Park, the railway provides a nostalgic journey like no other. Prices start from £34.65 for an Adult Day Rover, with shorter journey tickets also available.

Nick Simpson, Head of Mechanical Engineering at the NYMR, said: “The Class 37s are more than just locomotives, they’re legends of British engineering. This anniversary is a great opportunity for us to honour their lasting impact and give passengers the chance to relive an unforgettable era of rail travel.”
