The gardens are privately owned by the "Seigneur de Samaras" and were created in the 1920s by millionaire philanthropist Sir James Knott. His wealth and fascination for rare and unusual plans resulted in one of Europe's most outstanding gardens. Visitors will discover a Japanese gardens, exotic planting, water gardens, seasonal gardens, a formal rose and lavender garden and one of the largest herb gardens in the United Kingdom. There are guided tours of the manor house and agricultural museum. The Herb and Garden Cafe is ideally situated in the medieval walled garden, serving breakfast, lunch and cream tea. Six self-catering units in the Victorian courtyard are available from April to October.
