Robots & Us

Daily from the 7 March to 31 May

What are robots like today? What’s the reality and what is science fiction? A season of special activities and events kicks off this month exploring our relationship with robots. Join in with a futuristic football match complete with robot team mates in the Studio, then create your own ‘art-bot’ and set it loose in the Live Lab. Check the website for details of what’s happening on the day of your visit.

PLANETARIUM

The UK’s first 3D digital Planetarium, with presenter-led shows (all designed by our in-house Planetarium Team) for a range of different audiences – shows include seasonal stargazing (3D), Solar System Odyssey (2D & 3D), Exploring the Solar System (2D & 3D), Exploring the Galaxy (3D), Rocketship Adventure (2D) and Space Explorers (2D). 3D shows only available for ages 6+ due to health restrictions.

 

Solar System Odyssey (2D & 3D)

This epic show takes you a truly stellar odyssey – with multiple missions and destinations to choose from, no two shows are ever the same. This show has recently been revamped, with even more destinations to explore - welcome to your very own Solar System Odyssey.

 

Spring Stargazing (3D)

6 March – 20 May 2020. Regular daily shows, 3D: £3.50 per seat (members £1.75), in addition to standard admission. 3D shows only available for ages 6+ due to health restrictions.
Target audience: Age 8+. Suitable for families and adults

 

Discover the ever-changing cosmos and how our perception of it has evolved over time. Follow the moving constellations, investigate the planets, and take a peek at the future sky! This remarkable show combines knowledgeable presenters with our incredible 3D Planetarium to create a truly astounding experience.


Exploring the Solar System (2D and 3D)

Ongoing. Regular daily shows, 2D: £2.50 (members £1.25) or 3D: £3.50 per seat (members £1.75), in addition to standard admission. 3D only available for ages 6+ due to health restrictions.

Take a trip into space using the UK’s most advanced Planetarium! A presenter will fly you to the incredible worlds in our Solar System to see where astronauts of the future will explore. This awe-inspiring and totally immersive show is a fantastic introduction to astronomy.

 

IN THE STUDIO

Expedition Earth

Until 1 March. FREE with standard admission. Twice-daily on weekends and during school holidays, check times on arrival.

Welcome aboard! Join us on our spaceship as we journey to find the perfect planet to live on, and help us keep our spaceship systems in balance as we journey through space. A fun, interactive show which the whole family can join in with!

 

Robot Revolution

7 – 31 March. FREE with standard admission. Weekends and during school holidays, check times on arrival, sign-up on the day.

Target audience: Suitable for families.

 

Join us for a football match with a difference! We’ve transformed our Studio into a futuristic football stadium, where you can play alongside your robot team mates. Will you and your robot team mates win the cup? Does playing alongside a robot change how you feel about them?

 

Robot Revolution is part of our commitment to opening up science; take part in real scientific research and some current psychology research looking in to how we perceive robots to have human characteristics – your actions can shape the way the researcher researches!

 

 

Bodies, Atoms, Environments: Reimaging the Human

14 & 21 May, 7pm (90 minute workshop)

Target audience: Age 14+.

Tickets £3 per person

 

At the atomic level, humans are made of exactly the same material as the environment. But what does this mean for our ideas of where the human body begins and the environment ends?

 

This workshop led by poetry scholar Dr Sarah Daw, bioengineer Dr Sara Correia Carreira and artist Laura Denning will explore how science can transform our understanding of our bodies and the environment. Reimagine the human from new cellular and subatomic perspectives, and reconnect with the environment through immersive soundscapes and “projective” poetry writing.

Festive Feast

Join us for a range of fun hands-on activities exploring the food that we share over the festive season and how we can make it more sustainable. Have a go at cooking and experimenting with some missing ingredients, take a look at the science of gravy and share your ideas about what makes the perfect ‘show stopper’ centrepiece for a celebration meal.

 

Glorious Garlic

It might be cold outside but nature doesn’t stop for the winter! Pop by the greenhouse and see what’s active during the colder months, have a go at planting your own garlic bulbs.

 

Kitchen Coding

4 April – 31 May. FREE with standard admission. Drop in sessions, check time on arrival.

Target audience: Age 7+. Suitable for families.

 

Robots are part of our everyday lives, from running our city to helping in the home. Take part in this hands-on session and see if you would be able to direct a robot to complete a simple kitchen task. Will it be a food victory or disaster? This is a fun introduction to the concept of algorithms – using food!

Eco Invention Workshop

What if we could find ways to celebrate that use fewer of the Earth’s precious resources? This winter, LiveLab becomes a workshop for budding eco-elves, with craft activities running throughout the day including designing your own laser-cut snowflake, making beautiful decorations from Somerset-grown willow and folding and decorating a paper house lantern.

Scribblebots

Target audience: Age 5+. Suitable for families.

 

Can robots be creative? Can they create art, or do they need human input? Get hands-on by designing and making a drawing robot, and have a play with some ‘deep learning Artificial intelligence’ (AI) to find out more about how they work.

 


Robotic Pen Plotter

29 – 30 May. FREE with standard admission. Drop in sessions, check times on arrival.

Target audience: Age 5+. Suitable for families.

 

Can robots be creative? Join artist Simon Russel to find out, a motion graphic designer who interested in translating music and sound into visual art. Watch his robotic pen plotter in action and find out more about his artistic process, as we create brand new artworks on our gallery floor.

 


Robot Dance Party

Target audience: Age 5+. Suitable for families.

Allow a robot to teach you a dance created especially for We The Curious! Join one of our Nao robots as they lead a group warm-up and then teach us to dance the dab. A chance to showcase your best dance moves!

 

IN THE TINKERING SPACE

 

Home robots

4 – 8 April. FREE with standard admission. Drop in sessions, check times on arrival.

Target audience: Age 5+. Suitable for families.

 

Since ancient times people have dreamt of robots that can do our housework for us, but today these dreams are starting to coming true. Meet engineers from Dyson and have a play with some of the latest robotic vacuum cleaners. Share your dreams and fears for home robots and find out how far into the future they might be.

 

Can AI understand human emotion?

18 April – 21 May. FREE with standard admission. Drop in sessions, check times on arrival.

Target audience: Age 5+. Suitable for families.

 

Explore how machines can be taught to understand human feelings and emotions. Help to teach a machine to understand feelings and faces, try out an 'Emoji Mirror' and explore a map of the way people in Bristol are feeling on Twitter. Share your thoughts and feelings about using machines to read human emotions and help to create new 'crowd-sourced' algorithms for teaching machines emotions.

 

This event is part of our commitment to opening up science; take part in real scientific research, working alongside the Dynamic Genetics Lab at the University of Bristol.

The popular series of night-time Planetarium shows continues with this season’s shows, with a mix of Spring Stargazing, Exploring the Solar System, Solar System Odyssey, Exploring the Galaxy and Life in the Universe, all in stunning 3D.

 

Expect stunning visuals using the latest technology in special extended presenter-led shows, especially for adults. Plus, grab a drink and explore the Space Gallery too.

An audio-visual extravaganza, inspired by the music of Pink Floyd, featuring the entire 1973, 'Dark Side of the Moon' album in glorious 5.1 surround sound, with spellbinding abstract projections on the full dome enveloping the entire audience to create a truly astounding experience.

Holst’s Planets 3D

Enjoy Holst's masterpiece in the unique setting of the UK's only 3D Planetarium.

Be transported out into the solar system and get close up views of the mysterious worlds that inspired this iconic music, from the icy rings of Saturn, The Bringer of Old Age to the dusty craters of war-mongering Mars. The show's visuals have been specially created by the We The Curious Planetarium team and are controlled live during the show.

Please note that the audio is pre-recorded, not a live performance. Music is by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, conducted by Wladimir Jurowski and recorded at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, London, in 2009.

 

 


EVENTS FOR LITTLE KIDS:

Play with everything! Space to roam! Snacks allowed! Specially created for our younger visitors, with special Planetarium shows and our ever-popular Toddler Takeover events. We also run daily storytelling during weekends and school holidays.

 

Toddler Takeover: Come Rain Come Shine

1 May 7 2020, 9am-12 & 1pm-4pm.
Target audience: Children aged 5 and under

Tickets on sale soon!

Come and join us at one of our Toddler Takeovers sessions and have fun with weather-themed activities specially for the under 5s.

You can now choose between a morning or an afternoon session. We will be opening at 9am so that each session will be three-hours long, giving you plenty of time to explore. The exhibition floor will be closed between sessions (12-1pm) while we do a bit of a tidy up and restock the Kitchen ready for the next influx of little ones.

Experiment with feathers and flags in our wind machine, experience real clouds and make your own from wool in Cloud Lab and join Ursa and Leo for The Missing Puddle during storytime. Add a Planetarium show to you visit when you purchase your tickets for an extra £2.50 per person.

 

Space Explorers (2D)

Ongoing. Regular daily shows, £2.50 per seat (members £1.25), in addition to standard admission. Under 3s FREE.

Target audience: Suitable for under-6s, and their grown-ups.

Astronauts ready! Pack your bag and blast off into space as the Live Science Team trains you up to become a fully qualified Space Explorer! Especially for little explorers, join in and play ‘pass the planet’ as you discover the amazing things around our Universe.

 

Rocketship Adventure (2D)

Ongoing, regular daily shows on weekends and school holidays, £2.50 per seat (members £1.25), in addition to standard admission.

Target audience: Suitable for ages 4-6, and their grown-ups.

 

Join Stella the Bear on a quest to explore Earth… and beyond! This delightful presenter-led show combines immersive visuals with lots of audience interaction to create an exciting experience for children -- and their grown-ups. This show has been written by our Planetarium team, and is especially designed for 4-6 year olds, but suitable for up to age 7, an ideal companion to our Space Explorers show.

 

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

A quiet, early morning autism-friendly session, this is a chance to explore our exhibits at your own pace, chat with our staff and take part in some intriguing activities.

There will also be an autism friendly Planetarium show at 10.15am (suitable for age 5+). The fascinating show 'Exploring the Solar System' will be in 2D, with softer music, the lights on and the doors open, so you can leave at any time if needed.

 

Visitors are most welcome to stay on after 10.30, when other visitors will be allowed in to the venue.

BUMP Rollerdisco
