Known as the Gateway to England, Dover welcomes millions of visitors each year. Dover Museum and Bronze Age Boat Gallery is the district’s largest and varied museum showing the history of Dover including the world’s oldest known sea-going boat. The White Cliffs of Dover are internationally famous, attracting visitors from all over the world. The National Trust looks after extensive areas of chalk grassland and the rare flora and fauna it supports. Explore 2000 years of history at Dover Castle from the Great Tower to the Underground Hospital deep inside the White Cliffs. Dover Transport Museum showcases local transport history with period street scenes.


Head just along the coast to the town of Deal, steeped in maritime history and with its unspoilt seafront many agree that it is the prettiest seaside town in Kent. Discover maritime history at Deal Timeball Tower including its use for navigation aid, signalling and fight against smuggling. Deal Maritime & Local History Museum explores maritime history with displays of real and model boats and artefacts. Explore Deal Castle a fine example of a Tudor artillery castle built by the order of Henry VIII. Another part of Henry VIII’s chain of coastal is Walmer Castle former residence of the Duke of Wellington and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Just a short walk from the seafront you’ll find a wealth of independent shops and places to eat and drink.


Sandwich was once a bustling and prosperous port and is now said to be one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Britain.  Sandwich Guildhall Museum tells the story of Sandwich from the Mesolithic period to the 20th century. Discover the tree lined avenues and flowery borders of the beautiful Lutyen’s designed gardens at The Salutation Gardens.  Learn about the Romans successful invasion of Britain in 43AD at the impressive ruins of Richborough Roman Fort. Enjoy a mini tour of the family owned vineyard and winery at Barnsole Vineyard. Wander through the unspoilt streets where you’ll find a wealth of independent quirky and unique shops as well as a wealth of cafes, restaurants and pubs.


There are fantastic events happening throughout the year in White Cliffs Country. The 149th Open will be hosted at Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich in 2020.  Visit medieval Sandwich as it goes French for 'Le Weekend' in June. Get your walking boots on for the White Cliffs Walking Festival in August. See international and national artists at various venues during the two-week Deal Festival of Music and the Arts.
